5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Shower Filter Cartridge

A shower filter cartridge doesn't last forever — the carbon, KDF media, and mineral balls inside gradually become saturated with everything they've filtered out. The good news is your filter tells you when it's time, if you know what to look for.

1. It's been roughly 3 months

This is the baseline guideline for most cartridges, including BOTANVÈ's, and it's based on typical usage — roughly one shower per person per day in an average household. If your household showers more frequently, or you have several people sharing one bathroom, you may hit filter saturation sooner.

2. The chlorine smell is coming back

This is usually the clearest sign. One of the first jobs a fresh cartridge does is eliminate that sharp, chemical chlorine smell. When the carbon media becomes saturated, chlorine starts passing through unfiltered, and that smell gradually returns — often before you'd expect based on the calendar alone.

3. Your skin and hair start feeling different again

If you noticed less dryness, less tightness, or softer hair after switching to filtered water, pay attention when those benefits start fading. A saturated cartridge loses its ability to soften hard water minerals, which is often the first filtration stage to degrade — sometimes before chlorine filtration fully drops off.

4. Visible discoloration or buildup

If you can see the cartridge (some housings are semi-transparent, or you can remove it briefly to check), look for discoloration, visible mineral crust, or a change in color from when it was new. This is a physical sign the media has absorbed as much as it can.
